Why did Australia have to play the 5th place South American team? Now that Australia has moved to the Asian round, what happens to Oceania in future World Cups?

Oceania had half a spot, & South America had 4.5 spots. Thus the winner of Oceania played fifth place South America. The Spots are allocate with respect to the level of play in each region. The level of play in the Oceania region is not very high. Australia always topped the group except one year, I believe, and they win games by scores of 20 - 0.
Oceania would continue in the same manner. New Zealand should replace Australia as top of group and probably hardly qualify for a WC.

It is because in the oceania region Australia would always win due to the fact that no one else in the region are up to the same standard. Also if oceania got a gauranteed spot then another region would lose a spot to level out the numbers and they dont want that.

Do we (Australia) really want a guaranteed spot? We'd end up being a laughing stock like the USA. My question out of this if when there is only one team from each region allowed in each group why did Australia have to play Brazil... we had to play the south americans to qualify...im confused.

Australia will switch from OFC (Oceania) to AFC (Asia) qualifying. The OFC region will probaly continue to exist as a separate confederation but merge into AFC (Asia) for world cup qualifying purposes.

Handing OFC a guaranteed spot would basically be synonymous with handing Australia a guaranteed spot.

This system was made by fifa to ensure that Brazil, no matter how bad they are doing, they will make it to the world cup. They came up with this when brazil was on slump for two and a half decades.

i don't think that there are enough top level teams in the area for it to have its own region, that why.

I did. even if it became so not common. i had no idea what facet to bypass on. i became disillusioned at both communities. italy for beating germany (i luv germany) and france for beating brazil (i luv brazil) and argentina dropping, cuz they were those who beat mexico!
