Land Hermit crabs can see in the dark and can see very well and are very sesitive to shadows and movment... but they have a problem with judging depth and heigth.

They will molt in order to grow.. growing has little to do with their shell.. they will grow no matter what but extra shells are a must or they will in fact die. 3 per crab at the minimum.

Hermit crabs have modified gills that is why they must live in a warm and munid environment in order to survive any amount of time in captivity.

Hermit crabs also need salt water.. marine/ocreanic de-chlorinated water.. and also fresh de-chlorinated water.

Hermit crabs do not HAVE to drink from a sponge.. in fact sponges are used for keeping the humidity up and as a way from little crabs to get in and out of the water.

Hermit crabs can drink water with their feeder claw (which is the smaller claw.)

The large claw is called the Big Pincher and it is used for self defense and protection.. the crab uses it to block the enteracne of his shell.

Hermit crabs are not called that because they like to live ALONE... but because they carry their home on their back.. a shell, which they live alone inside... BUT they live and thrive in large colonies and in fact it is a must for any Land Hermit Crab owner to keep more than one, otherwise it is cruel and bad crab keeping.

In the wild they live in large colonies of 100 or more.

They do not reproduce in captivity.. they only mate and then "lay" their eggs near the wave/water break line on the beach and sometimes in tidal pools.. there the tides wash the eggs out to sea where they hatch and feed on plankton and psudo-planckton and other microscopic yummies that live in the sea.. that is why their eggs will never survuve in captivity.. becaseu it is impossible for the at home owner to reproduce the currents, temperature and exact makeup of the ocean environment nessecary for the hatched eggs to survuve and grown into baby hermit crabs.

Many times Land Hermit Crabs are confused with Marine Hermit Crabs.. they are cousins but require much different conditions.

Hermit crabs are scavengers and will eat fruits veggies meats and fish as well as bark wood rotting wood, moss and other decaying matter..

for the home crab owner it is very imortant that we provide a good mix of fresh and dried foods providing a complete diet in order for our crabs to survive and thrive.

Tank contitions are a must for them to survive.. they must be in a warm and humid environment otherwise they will suffocate, dehydrate and die.
