If I work over 12 hrs, do I still get paid, or is it against the law?

I work in a little cubicle for an auto parts supplier. If you can focus your question to me, that would be perfect.

It varies from state to state...but i know here in Connecticut...working 12 hours is not illegal at all...you just need to punch out for a lunch break. But try finding the department of labor for your state on the internet

It depends on which state you're in. I assume you are an hourly employee of the auto parts supplier. For hourly workers, most if not all states require you to be paid our hourly wage for the first 8 hours, 1.5 times that for 8 to 12, and double time for over 12 hours in one 24 hour period. As far as I know, in no state is it OK to NOT pay you for ANY hours you work.

I don't think your employer can force you to work more than 12 hours, but if it's cool with you, they have to pay you for it.

You can check by searching for your state's labor relations board, which probably has an easy-to-understand summary or FAQ.

It depends on your total number of hours per week and your job category. If you're an "exempt" or a "salaried" employee, you've taken a job where you agree to a flat rate per week, regardless of the hours worked each day or the total hours per week. If you're an "hourly" or a "non-exempt" employee, you get paid by the hour. In this case you may be entitled to be paid at the regular hourly rate, if your total number of hours is still less than 40 that week, or overtime at time-and-a-half pay, if you exceed 40 hours that week. Note, your OT is counted on the hours over 40 for the entire week, not each day--- so if you have a 12-hour day and a 6-hour day in the same week, you only get 2 overtime hours.

Some jobs, especially those with governments or unionized workers, have more favorable arrangements for extra hours, but this is the minimum by law.

no, for the type of work you do, there is no restriction as to the number of hours you work in a day - though you are entitled to several breaks.

the only reason why you wouldn't be paid is if you are "on salary". that means, no matter if you work 1 hr or 24 hrs, you will be paid the same.

You should still get paid if you are being paid by the hour. If your employer is expecting you to work without pay because that is his claim, find out who to complain to locally. He is stealing from you!
