Its believed that the moon came from a glancing collison between the earth and a large body back when the earth was mostly molten. This tore off large chunks of the earth that slowly coalesced in orbit to form the moon.

a mars sized object crashed into the earth while it was still liquid-ish and the liquid splashed and solidified as the moon. thats what i learned in e.science this year.
