What ever you do make sure you go to a decent sushi restaurant for your first experience. Nothing will turn you off to expanding your horizons like food poisoning.
If you like spicier food you can try the spicy tuna roll. Fairly safe for a first time if you like it hot. Salmon Asparagus rolls are a pretty safe bet as well. The California roll is fine but it is not really sushi at all. Get one of those or a Philly roll as a filler to alternate with.
Again do not go to a discount sushi place you will pay for it later. Spend the money on better sushi and you will have a great experience. Also ask the server they are used to dealing with newcomers and are helpful.
Enjoy. It becomes addicting!

The California Roll Is A Good One To Start With

I'd go for the raw fish immediately. Salmon or tuna are very good. A little bit of soy sauce mixed a tiny dab of wasabi paste to give it some spice.

The link below lists different types of sushi and their ingredients. You can find the types that appeal to you.

And as a rule, always eat sushi with chopsticks.

Start with cooked stuff. The aforementioned California Rolls (which is crab, not smoked salmon as some weirdo previous poster mentioned) and shrimp tempura rolls are good introductions. Then try moving onto other rolls with sauces on them, possibly spicy tuna rolls or something else. Then try the real stuff, starting with tuna and salmon nigiri. If you like it, keep experimenting with different fish. I'd save stuff like octopus and sea urchin roe for last though. Lots of people don't like that.

Any roll but for " real sushi", first of all make sure you choose a quality restaurant, where the fish is fresh, try tuna, shrimp and salmon. Stay away from sea urchin, eel at the beggining.

It all depends.

One of the most problematic area for newbie seems to be NORI (seaweed) and RAW FISH. Do you have problem with either?

If you don't like to try raw fish on your first experience, then avoid anything that contains it. California roll typically have pink/orange "dots" all around it, which actually are salted (but otherwise raw) fish eggs. Are you ok with it?

Also, the black sheet of wrapping around rice is called NORI. It is actually a dried up alagee, and it has slight fishy flavor. Are you ok with it?

With rolls, chefs can either wrap it up for you with NORI inside or outside. Normal one is NORI outside, which you will taste NORI as first thing. If it is wrapped inside, you will taste vinegard rice first, then you will not likely taste NORI at all.

For first timers, my recommendation will be TAMAGO which is NOT rolls, but regular NIGIRI style, but the toping is a slightly sweetened chicken egg omlet. Then under neath it, the regular slightly vinegard rice. It is usually the least offensive thing for first timer.

You could also try OINARI, or INARI sushi. It is a fried tofu wrapping sweetened, and rice stuffed inside. Although it doesn't look like sushi, it is a form of sushi.

Then you can graduate to all kinds of different thigns. Cucumber roll perhaps? Or spiced tuna, or California rolls. Good tuna's are usually oderless and have very little fish flavor. It may be a good second choice.

As sushi's are made just for you, chefs will be glad to customize your dish to whatever you like. For this, it's better if you sit at the sushi-bar rather than table, so you can directly communicate with the chef. Most of them will gladly talk to you and even suggest to you what to try first, but you have to ask first.

Another suggestion, go easy on wasabi. I suggest you don't use any, until you know what you like. Also, go easy on soy sauce. You are supposed to use just a little, and NEVER saturate your rice with it.

Good luck!

I would suggest starting with the imitation crab meat sushi rolls. You will get the taste, without having raw fish. Then, once you feel comfortable with the idea of trying raw fish go for it.

Wait until you're married. Find a nice fish, date, get to know him, get married, then do some sushi rolls with him.

Forget the California roll; it isn't even authentic.

Try nigiri sushi with maguro (tuna). It's simple and basic.
