Goldfish, Koi, Beta Fish, Pleco algae eaters, ummm... I've just always had goldfish. Oh, another cool one is Shebunkin. They're a goldfish but they have multicoloring like Koi.
I think that's a really good choice for the common miniature pond that most people have. I say miniature.. coz when I was building a 1,000 gallon pond, people say.. what size, I say it's pretty big ,, it's 1,00 gallon. then they correct me and said it was small. I did more research.. it's 1,500 gallon. I have one koi in it. It still seems big to me, the one who used a shovel to dig it!!! LOL
I wouldn't do Koi unless I had at least a 1,000 gal or larger pond. Some people are really anal about saying koi ponds HAVE to be 5' or deeper so they can build muscle properly., blah blah. I recommend at least 3' deep and 1,500 gallons or larger. I love my little giant water pump. Uses hardly any electricity and pumps a load of water!

Depends on the size of the pond and the climate. For the most part, comet or shubunkin goldfish do well in most ponds and can withstand the common mistakes made by first timers. Plus they are usually cheap...so if you lose a few it isn't a hard hit in the wallet.
I wouldn't think about getting koi until you had a little experience and your pond is at least 1,500 gallons.

Koi fish and Goldfish survive well in ponds. Also catfish can, but it can depend on the type of catfish. Also, if you pick catfish, do not put other fish in with them, even if the fish a larger, the catfish will usually find a way to eat it.

I know that coy fish survive in ponds but if they are very little you must have something to scare away the herons because they like to eat coy fish or perhaps any other small pond fish.

In mine I had Gold Snails from the puppy save that sucked up a good number of the Algae on the perimeters. Plus I had some Tadpoles too from the puppy save that ate the Algae. Then for fish I had Comet Goldfish, i love the Sarasa Comets maximum proper. I picked those that were regularly white with in undemanding words rather of orange on them because they were more effective instantly ahead to work out contained in the darkish pond with my black pond liner. have relaxing including your fish pond! :)
