If you look at the people running this country, they are part of the 3% of the wealthiest people. You never hear about someone who was making an average salary running for office, that's because it cost so much to run for political office. There you go.

53% of all the stock in the market is owned by just 1% of American households.
Elections are bought not won.
Look at what the Government acts upon, whose will...
Like toothpaste the wealthiest make more wealth not by squeezing it out of the middle class, but by squeezing those with lowest economic status. It is we who are to blame also, we Americans are taught from very young to not care if the granny next door is eating dog food sandwiches to save the money needed to afford her medication. We care only about what we need. Our value is weighed in how much we can earn for ourselves. We are robotic consumers. We have sold out all culture, Music, Art, play, relationship values, dare I say Love? All for this Libertarian, psychotic, toxic mentality... In a nutshell neo-liberalism, worship of so-called "free-markets" (we ignore corporate welfare) and now we get what we get.
So the Governement in some ways IS representative of our values.
We need to change that.
