According to Paul James, Master Gardener of the HGTV show, Gardening by the Yard, the best time to water the lawn is at dawn so that you do not burn it or cause disease. Check him out on his new webcasts or on the HGTV website. Since I saw that show, my St Augustine grass is thicker and greener than ever!

You want to water your lawn when sun is not evaporating water, so your lawn can soak up the water. Very early morning or evening. I prefer very early morning because when you water your lawn in the evening, you promote fungus and insect activities.

When you water your lawn 4-6 am, let the lawn soak up the water, so turn the water on for at least 20 minutes each section. Otherwise your lawn won't grow deep roots. Without deep roots, your lawn will be weak under extreme weather conditions and will also prone to disease.

Don't cut your grasses too short. Keeping them little long keeps them healthy and minimizes weed growth.

Early in the morning is the ideal time to water for most lawns. There's less wind, less hot sun, and your lawn has a full day to dry. Watering at night invites mildew and fungus. In the hot afternoon, much of your water can be lost to wind and evaporation. If you live in the dry southwest, though, the rules are different. There, watering in the evening or night causes less evaporation.

NEVER EVER water your lawn in the late afternoon or evening. This causes fungus and mold. You want to water about an hour before sunrise to an hour after so that the water has a chance to soak in and then once the sun comes up, it can dry the foliage out. NEVER EVER during HIGH noon....
Get yourself a timer for the hose, set it the night before and let the rest do the work.

Early morning. If you water your lawn in the evening, you run the risk of having the water stagnate and getting a lawn fungus, which is a really big pain to get rid of. Trust me. I spent many summer days spreading fungicide on my dad's lawn and we ended up having to replace portions of the lawn with sod. Not fun.

I think it is best to water the lawn in the morning or late afternoon. Another words, avoiding high temperature time zone in a day,so that water doesn't evaporate quick and roots can absorb water.

The best time that I have found is late afternoon when the sun is going down , that way the water will have a chance to soak in and not dry up and burn the lawn .
