Opossums can carry very dangerous diseases, I had this problem in Oregon, I called Animal Control and they gave me some traps that would lure the oppossum into a cage, then I would call them to come get it when I caught one, and they would check it, give it shots, and release it in an area away from the population of humans. Check with your Animal Control people.

I am a Wildlife Technician and can help you. Opossums are pretty docile animals - they are very bad at defending themselves. Ever heard of the saying Playing Possum? That is because they show you there teeth and hiss (looks scary but they are not going to attack or bite) - if that doesnt work they will literally go into a catatonic state and "play dead". They will urinate and defecate and play dead so the preditor (you) leaves them alone, most animals wont eat dead things.
I am a huge fan of them = they are Canada's only Marsupial (carries babies in the pouch) and they are immune to rattlesnake venom! I say take pictures and enjoy.
Killing them is certainly going to kill all the babies - and trapping and relocating is not advised either as it will just cause the animal to lose its home territory and eventually it will die. I cant believe how many replies say to do something so inhumane!

NUmber one possums are not huge rats, they are marsupials, like koalas. Number 2 they are more than likely hanging out in your back yard because they are eating the dog/cat food you put out, or they have a den nearby.
You can look in your phone book for numbers of pest removal services or try to correct the feeding situation if that is the problem.

Don't leave your dog out in the yard...and it's Opossum, not posems.
Make sure your garbage only goes out the night before pick-up and don't leave any food stuffs around your yard. If you have a garden, get bird netting. Opossums hate that stuff and are too lazy to rip at it.
