During slavery, blacks were brainwashed to believe that they were ugly. The slave owners poked fun at their hair, facial features and skin color. They were constantly called ******(that's how the whites pronounced ****** in the south) slaves begin to talk to eachother the same way the slaves owners talked to them. They began to view themselves how the slave owners viewed them. It just trickled down from one generation to the next. I dont think African Americans ever snapped out of it. do you?

If there were any issues with Black women's hair styles during the period of slavery in America then white male slave owners sure didn't have them. They were sleeping with the Black female slaves probably more then their freed white counterparts. They would bring them to bed with their wife's in the same room in certain instances. This must of been very devastating to the White female mental state. By the way . What's the deal with tanning being a multi-billion dollar a year industry at the risk of peoples health. Are there any inferiority issues there? Just curious.

Yes. I think some of us do and I am an African American woman. I think it's worse now than ever before. You can put ten of us in a room and I guarantee that at least eight will have on a weave or a hairpiece. I think it's due to a lack of self esteem. I see that in Black males as well. There has to be a name of some sort on a shirt, must have a name brand sneeker, jewelry on top of of jewelry, the most expensive car etc... It's like they are trying to make a statement that they are somebody.

I think these actions make us look like minstrals. Black people are naturally beautiful and we are all somebody because God created us. I think the lack of self esteem is rampant. I think it explains some of the lack of motivation and poor choices that are made in some segments of the black community.

Why don't you just bring up slavery because one don't have anything to do with th other unless you talking about the mixed babies and their hair. any way Chequetta w said it all. Yes we got over it but the white man still can't get enough this day in time and the girl won't leave the black man alone whether he has money or not. Grow up boy . The slave got with God and made though.Remember what go around Come around. This world not over yet and God will let everyone pay for their sins. Yes what i'm saying is that I don't care how many year it take WHAT GO AROUND COME AROUND . WHITE IN SLAVERY

First, how dare you assume women do anything to their appearance because they hate themselves!

Second, Were you there? Many slaves were treated with respect. There were Black slave owners. And a great deal of African Americans today actually did not originate from American slaves, there was a great deal of immigration after slavery ended you know.

And as for people today, you shouldn't stereotype anyone. not all Blacks wear extensions, and some Whites, Hispanics, and Asians do..........so show respect for your fellow humans and stop asking questions that perpetuate ugly rumors.

I think it has more to do with how society views all women. Women are constantly bombarded with of a slim figured, long haired, fair skinned woman that in reality doesn't exist. Although it does seem to be worse for women of color, because at least that archetype is white, which means they will never fit into what society views as beautiful. All they can to is try to come close with blonde weave, etc.

It's all just a matter of personal preference. I actually have short hair and guys just like it. And i prefer a man with short hair over a person with long hair because long hair tends to make guys look too girly.

Hair extension are a easy way to have long hair and changing hair length by growing long to cut short later is time consuming and does not match the speed of fashion.

Oh please! where did you get that from? Are you saying that all black women wear weaves? open your eyes, there are so many beautiful natural styles out there Including weaves! black women have the most versatile hair types to wear beautiful hairstyles. It has nothing to do with being inferior, it has to do with them knowing how to look good and having the knowledge to have more than one hairstyle.
