Vinegar, sometimes coke for silver, or copper polisher for pennies. If you are shining them for collectors reasons however, you should not use any of these methods, it is usually best for value to leave them be, but if you insist on cleaning them many hobby shops have special cleaners for coin collectors.

Easy off bam works great on Copper Penny's Cleans them fast. Not sure about other coins.

If you're doing it to coins that you are collecting, DON'T. It greatly decreases the values of the coins, unless it's done by professionals (and even then it will still reduce the values.)

Make a paste from white vinegar and table salt. Use a toothbrush to scrub the coins.

keep them dissolved in a dilute solution of vinegar in water overnight, and wipe them clean with a soft cloth in the morning.
