I've heard it used to refer to someone sitting and allowing something to "sink in." For example, if I'd just given someone some news that they didn't want to hear, I'd let them have some time to sit and marinate for awhile before pursuing the issue.

Yeah, my friends and I always said that this guy we knew in high school marinated in his cologne every morning before coming to school b/c the scent was so outrageously strong.

Yes, when someone douses themselves in cologne or perfume, I tend to refer to it as "marinating".

You can often use it, when you see someone in trouble, and is 'stewing in his own juices' Either will work, and people will know what you mean.
