the larger the number, the smaller the ring. so an 18 gauge would be much smaller than an 8 gauge

The larger the number the smaller the gauge ok. So 18g is pretty much the "thinnest" gauge out there, anything smaller would bend or break too easily.

So, this is getting more confusing than need be. I believe my nose ring is either an 18 or 20 guage. It doesn't really matter - when you go to a tattoo place to get it done they aren't conna put an 8 guage in - it would be about as big around as a key ring. Blech!

wire gages get smaller as the number gets larger, 18 is very small and 8 is quite large

18 is smaller - they typically won't pierce with an 18g though. I'm almost positive the standard is 14g - maybe even 16g for hoops. In NY, they shy away from piercing with the studs (which is probably what you're referring to) - and i think the studs are, in fact, 18g.
