Many poorly educated and more then likely illiterate early Colonial settlers pronounced the word Niger ( Latin / Roman for Black ) as N***** . The English and Dutch settlers used the word Niger for imported Black slaves. All romance languages ( French, Spanish, Portuguese ) are derived from Latin, so ***** was the Portuguese and Spanish version for Niger and more heavily used in South America and certain Caribbean Islands were slaves were exported to. The original Latin name can be found in the Old Testament of the Bible ( the Niger River being one of the four rivers flowing from the Garden of Eden ) and is the name of current African countries Niger and Nigeria. The Romans derived the word from the ancient Nubian's who referred to their Emperor as Ngr ( no vowels were used in their ancient language like Hebrew ) which meant the Black God and whom represented God on earth to them. It is actually quite ironic that
a name which basically meant God has come to be known
as a derogatory word. Then again if Black people
really studied there own history, they wouldn't be so easily confused by the fake psycho babble that the word is bad. FYI ... certain acronyms have become racial slurs but once fully explained they actually seem pretty silly.
Example. Spanish Portuguese Indian Colored ( SP!@ ) and With Out Papers ( W@P) . Silly but as I stated earlier alot of this stuff is started by uneducated and illiterate people.

You know the "N" word is not the nicest word but it is a term that blacks use differently from others . When we say it to each other is can mean a number of things, so no harm, however when person of another ethnic group says this word charged with connotations of hatred and condescension when it specifically refers to the color of our skin when said by other than blacks well it's kinda like fighting words. Regardless of the meaning of the word the context in which it is used carries all the meaning needed to start trouble.

Well for sum black people the n word is a way for them to mock the past....kind of move on with it and turn it into something that is not negative to them. The problem with that is that a lot of people find it offensive...but i dont think it will ever stop being used and thats juss the way it is.

(Some) should be the operative word here.As for why some African-Americans do,I don't have a clue.I'm 48 and a Human-Being and it really strikes me hard to in vision OUR history as Human-Beings and the totally inhuman treatment of one another, for ANYONE to give power to such an ugly and profane word.Curious,I certainly hope that before I leave this earth, the n-word will be only there as a reminder for what should never had been.

ok why would a black guy get defensive if another black guy called him the "N" word? he wouldn't because they are the same. if a white person called a black person that the black person thinks the white person is talking down to them. you just have to understand it works that way. out of all my black friends one lets me call him that ONLY because of how close we really are. and i get called a wigger so it works out fine

OK, let me give it to you straight. In our society(America, anyway) it is alright for anyone of color to say offensive things. And they know that noone will say anything to them. But, it is never, ever ok for white people to say anything about any race.
