Definitely. the current minimum wage pays a worker around $200 for a 40-hour week. Unless you're eating dog food, you can't live on that little money. And there are millions of Americans who do their best.

But Congress doesn't care about poor people, so they refuse to allow them to earn a wage they can actually live on. It's disgusting, the way the government craps on the very people who need their help the most.

Of course not! All it would do is put small businesses out of business. Minimum wage was not set up as a LIVING WAGE, it was meant to be a LEARNING WAGE. People who take jobs at minimum wage are either unskilled, uneducated or mentally challenged to do anything more. If you are unskilled, find a skill that interests you and learn it. If you are uneducated, get an education. If you are mentally challenged, you are most likely not living on your own or trying to raise a family, so chances are this is pocket money which is more than enough for someone who isn't skilled or educated because of unfortunate mental inability. Raising the minimum wage will do nothing for poverty.

NO! In a Capitalist society such as ours, there MUST exist rich AND poor in order to function! Sad but true. When ever the minimum wage is raised,it essentially gives everyone else a pay DECREASE in the same amount. Then prices go up and so do "other peoples" wages to make up for the shortfall . 40 years ago you could buy a new car for 2 or 3 thousand dollars. Can you today? Know why?Simple!

...at least for awhile? Yes it would, but that would only be a short-term solution. Do you remember a saying "Give a man a fish and it will appease his hunger. Teach a man to fish and he will never be hungry". Teaching/learning - training! These are long-term solutions
At the same time, consider what such an increase will do. It will raise the price of many items, causing elderly people (or others) on fixed incomes to have a lower standard of living.

i don't think it would end poverty but it would be nice for those working in fast food restaurants to make more than 5.15 an hour. I know that personally, i would not work anywhere for $5.15. A WHOLE DAY of work for that couldn't even fill up my gas tank. Minimum wage needs to be raised but it will not end poverty.

No it would skyrocket.

I own a restaurant, last year Minnesota raised min wage to $6.15, a 20% increase...I had to lay off 10 people in order to maintain a viable business.

Many other restaurants had to do the same.

No. Poverty will always exist, because there will always be people who are simply not willing to look for work.

It would put many businesses out of business, so therefore, it may INCREASE the poverty.
