I'd really like to get an Idea of who people REALLY consider the best we've had based on accomplishments and not which end of the political spectrum the person hangs out in so I've excluded our current and immediate past president. And to be fair, here are mine in no particular order: Jefferson (Louisiana Purchase), Monroe (Monroe Doctrine), Polk (Texas and California), T. Roosevelt (Labor Reform and Environment) and Lincoln (Civil War).

Lame, lame, lame. Far and away our best president was George Washington because of the precedents he set; most importantly, stepping down after two terms. Lincoln is next because he kept the country together. Jefferson was smart and innovative but irascible. Teddy Roosevelt would be my #3 because of his progressive policies mainly but I love him for setting up the National Park System. Fourth, FDR for all those amazing programs - TVA, Civilian Conservation Corps, etc. Finally, Kennedy - no one was more qualified to be President of the US - his intellect, judgment, personality and background were all a credit to his country.

Dwight Eisenhower (Korean War, actually fought for America)
Franklin Delano Roosevelt (Great Depression)
Theodore Roosevelt (Labor Reform, again fought for America)
John F. Kennedy (Civil Rights)
George Washington (Independence from Britain, once again, fought on front lines)

I respect presidents who fight for the country instead of playing war with others lives (GWB), so Grant would belong, but too many scandals.
