There is a new service called Megabus. It's a British outfit that just started operating in the states in April.

Their fare for Detroit to Chicago is $27.50.
That's about 30 percent under Greyhound.

If your not afraid to fly and your schedule is a bit open, you can sometimes get airfare cheaper then bus tickets and it's much faster.
Try some of the travel sites or sometimes even the direct websites of the airlines. Spirit is almost always running great flight deals.

on the east coast, there's the chinatown bus. it's dirt cheaper than greyhound, more than 1/2 off the price!
