Most often when someone says or thinks that "something" is stupid... Its a matter of THEM not being capable or willing to understand it.
Regarding others... saying "you're dumb" or anything similar makes the person saying it PART of the problem!!! Such things indicates that any such person saying or even thinking such a thing would also view race, age, color, etc etc etc in the same manner!
Would it not be better to associate yourself with those people? You'd be admired for your intellect. And being around you they could learn and improve right? At least being "stupid" they have the opportunity to become smarter/room for growth.... Simply saying to someone that he or she is means that such people have pretty much set up their own road blocks in life.

When the 'mentally challenged' individual says something dumb and you want to point it out, just cringe for a second and shake your head. If they still don't get the fact that they have made a total dumb**** out of them self ask them slowly if they thought about what they just said. That almost always works.
P.S. ...Did you think about how you asked that question?...

i think you need to just ask, "why do you always do stuff like this?sometimes it seems like you just don't think." or something along those lines. i don't want to put words in your mouth or anything. but if you say something like this you get your point across and if you say it gently, it will come out nicely

Do you hear yourself what are you saying? That's foolish! OR
You're stupid! I'm sorry but you are!
Sorry but nicer than all what you get it's impossible.
Better you don't say nothing.

Say "Every day I wake up thinking that people just cannot get any stupider... and every day I'm proven horribly wrong!"
