That is a very good sign of spyware. If your computer is not properly secured (software firewall, good antivirus program, anti-spyware program), then your computer is literally an open door to whatever the internet throws at you.
If you dont have a firewall up and running, then you will be victom to spyware bots that look for open ports to the internet. Even if you dont open your browser and look up sites, your computer can still be infected. If you computer is infected bad enough, then you are going to have to download anti spyware programs and do what you can to get rid of it. Google spyware search and destroy. It will look and clean your computer of most spyware. However, if it is infected enough, then even that program may not get rid of it. You will have to go to start, then run, then type in msconfig. See the startup programs and services that start with you computer when they run. Go on the internet and look them up if you dont know what they mean, and when you find bad ones, uncheck them.

If it is not spyware, then it may be a bad drive or something thats failing inside of your computer. Oftentimes if your cd drive is failing, if you put a cd inside it will take up the whole cpu forever until you either get rid of the cd or restart the computer.

The best thing to do (if you're running windows) is to open task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete), but you've probably opened that to see you're running at 100%. Go to the Processes tab and sort by the CPU column by clicking on that column twice (not double clicking, just two separate clicks).

This will show you which processes are using up the CPU time. Ignore "System Idle process". Note down the names of the ones that are taking most of the time. Then do a search on the net for those names. They may come up as malware that you'll need to get rid of.

Or, if you're a bit of a gambler, just click "end process". Be warned though, this might close an app you actually use, so save anything important first.

If it's running at 100% even when you aren't doing anything, you probably have a virus, or spyware. Try running a virus scan first before anything else. If you are still having trouble after that, press Cntrl-Alt-Del and in the window that pops up select Processes, then CPU. This will sort your programs by how much processor they are taking up. System Idle doesn't count. To stop a program that is taking up a lot of processor, just click it on the list and then click "End Process"

Why would you want your Computer to be operating at anything other then 100%? Windows just throws all of the extra CPU into a process called System Idle process, this is not a bad thing. As you use more programs the CPU gets dispersed out to other things. And returns to the idle process after you close the other application.

Even if it's running says it's using 100%, this may just mean that like 95% is idleing. This isn't a problem. If not, other programs will be using the usage up. If so, I'd call Geeks on Call to come out and give you a hand.

I don't believe you are doing anything wrong... You just need to cut back on what you are running or get more memory and maybe even a better processor... The computer I have here runs anywhere from 3-20% usage... but I have a shitload of memory and other things on it...

You have to cut down on your programs.

Disable some services, shut down unnecessary applications. If all else fails, transfer your important data to DVDs, CDs, etc or removable media. Then reinstall your operating system. (probably windows)

Then reinstall applications and transfer back data.
