You certainly have opened a can of worms! Let me state, first of all, that high octane does not mean more condensed! Is racing a sport? You better believe it is! Try and sit strapped in a car that is 115-125 degrees F for as much as 4 hours, while working the steering wheel and keeping full concentration on track and car conditions. Most drivers lose 10-15 pounds every time they race. Is it a waste of fuel? Possibly, but much of what is in or on your current vehicle is torture tested on these race cars before that part is released to the public. Also, isn't is a waste for your favorite athlete to drive a Hummer or some other gas guzzler around? NASCAR, and all racing for that matter, is a sport and a source of entertainment. It may not be your type of entertainment, but let's be careful whose glass house you throw that rock at. And, for clarification, NASCAR does NOT use methanol. It uses High Octane Racing Fuel, the stuff your car does not use, but could if you had $5.50/gallon.

Races hold a strong traditional and nostalgic place in American society which evolved in parallel with the automotive vehicle.
Traditionally, auto races have provided a wonderful testbed where technologies are first implemented that improve vehicles. However, with the advent of hyper-commercialism in sports (the endorsements, outrageously high prize amounts, etc..), this has fallen by the wayside as a focus of these sports.
It is more profitable to seek the best endorsements and win the highest paying races than it is to use your team as a vehicle for creating more efficient vehicles. In other words, they are now far more concerned with creating cars that win the races than they are concerned about the impacts they can have on the world. There is no motivation for them to try to make their cars more efficient, only faster and with greater endurance. Where as previously, there were economic benefits to both the auto technology maker and the racing team for implementing new technology (because most were aimed at better handling, better performance). This relationship has been stunted due to the resistance of auto technology makers to address alternative fuels, just as the same resistance in the marketplace has kept us in gas guzzling monsters.
Now we should know better, but, somehow, we have developed a society that believes no cost is too high for amusement (or competition).
So, although the exact quantity surely differs greatly from race to race, an obscenely large quantity is used in order to keep the auto racing industry going. Millions of gallons per year, I am sure.
One could argue that many other industries consume obscenely large quantities of gasoline also. Look at the logistics involved with the movement of any large companies goods, or the movement of military goods.
BTW, I'm no Nascar fan. I find it insufficiently redeeming to see cars or people run around in circles, and the organizations who host these events, in their desire for greater profits, have long ago made a trip to the races a miserable experience.

an insignificant amount. certainly no more than is "wasted" by flying college and professional sports teams all over the country .then think of all the fuel "wasted" by fans traveling to and from these games oh, you've also got to figure in the energy "wasted" to light, heat and cool the indoor arenas used by many of these sports teams.as far as NASCAR not being a sport there are millions & millions of fans who would disagree
with you ,starting with me. I think the amount of fuel "wasted" by NASCAR is probably the least of our countrys fuel crisies problems.by the way NASCAR is currently teasting a more environment friendly fuel which they hope to implement by 2007
