the illness (ich) is caused by a ciliated protazoa called Ichthyophthirius multifiliis . I don't know much about the disease but you can read more about it at:

When their immune system has been compromised. Generally when they become stressed they lose their slimey coat and thus become open to external parasites like ick.

any fish will catch ich when in the company of a infected fish ,your question when should be how . if you have a fish with ich go to your pet store and seek treatment such as ridich.if your fish has no symtoms such as white dots on itself dont worry its fine

They get ich by other infected fish, temp changes, and stress caused by temp changes, too many fish, too many water changes, not enough water changes....depending on what size tank you have and how many goldfish you have in there is probably key to your problem. RidIch is a nice lil product though that will help. Good luck!
