The only mechanical disaster is caused by the OPERATOR by not changing the Oil @ correct intervals.,& using the wrong oil ! YOU don't run the same oil in an air cooled engine as you do in a water cooled engine BUTT of coarse the OWNERS Service Guide would have explained the correct OIL.The 160,000 miles that I put on a 59 bug will contest to that.OH yea ! I put a clutch in it & it almost took an hour.IT had 60,000 miles on it when I bought it.IF ONLY I HAD IT NOW ! Then after my X was REAR ended & smashed into a caddy I had to take off all the fenders & bumpers, put on tear drop headlights & taillights so I could drive it!
"YEA" U rite -- a real piece of junk...oh yea - after the crash I put another 40,000 miles on it..'who ever let dem germans push such junk on us'ens..

My old 1966 Beetle was far from a mechanical disaster. It had 115,000 miles on the engine when it was totaled by a drunk driver. The only thing besides an oil change and a tune-up that was done was a 9$ carburetor rebuild after eight years on the road. By comparison, my 1974 El Camino was a piece of junk. It has leaking main seals at 75,000 miles and a needed a new cam chain. The Vega was worse.

Keep the oil clean (add an external filter) adjust the valves regularly, drive in mid range to high rev's, down shift going up hills to maintain engine speed at higer rev's, keep it tuned up, have the oil bath air filter serviced regularly and you can push these babies to well over 100,000 miles without a problem.
Good idea to install an oil temp guage and an altimeter.
One slight problem was the change from leaded gas to non leaded. This can be handled by changing the valves and seats.
Guess you got a lemon, or won't spend money to maintain it!

Bubba, You don't know what your talking about. The rear mounted VW engine and it's Porche cousin, is the best selling (in the VW Beetle) of any auto to date. 22 Million total for the German built production run and God Knows how many were produced in South America.

They weren't I've had several. It really depends on the climate that you are using them in.
