This was the biggest load of rubbish ever and a complete rewrite of history. Based on truth yes, the truth no. They were all dressed like highland clans but were lowland families. This was nominated as the worst film ever to win an Oscar. As a Scot I find it an embarrassment

The History Channel used to have a series about matching historical movies to historical fact, and they said that Braveheart, for a movie, was pretty good especially in the larger contexts of the plot. Of course, some of the plot complications would be almost impossible to verify, or even have anything to base a script upon, but that is the problem with historical narrative, the script writer thinks he has to throw in some soap opera details or else everyone will zone out.

It was overblown ... William Wallace did not have the extensive impact that the movie portrayed, nor was there ever any history between him and the English princess

Although Wallace had some importance to Scotland's history, it was Robert The Bruce who rallied Scotland to fight back more successfully.

Yes it is.
The events may have been exaggerated, but William Wallace did fight the British Crown and died in the way he did in the movie. His head was set on a pike over the tower of London, and his body was quartered and set to his followers as a message to stand down, but they didn't and Robert the Bruce became King of Scotland.

It is very loosely based on a real person. In fact, its history is absolutely terrible. Hollywood has very little respect for history, and you can rest assured that a vast majority of historical films are inaccurate. However, that doesn't mean they aren't entertaining. I like Braveheart quite a bit.

Here are a few dates concerning him. He was real and a national hero.
William Wallace (c1270 - 1305)

Sir Wiliam WallaceWilliam Wallace is one of Scotland's greatest national heroes, undisputed leader of the Scottish resistance forces during the first years of the long and ultimately successful struggle to free Scotland from English rule at the end of the 13th Century.

Records of Wallace's life are patchy and often inaccurate. This is partly because early accounts of his heroic deeds are speculative, and partly because he inspired such fear in the minds of English writers at the time, that they demonised him, his achievements, and his motives.

It's based on the life of William Wallace, who tried to keep Scotland free from British rule. He was not successful but still considered a hero.

Yes, it was real. The movie was a bit over done, but they have to do stuff like that to make people want to see it more. You know how it is, most people aren't as interested in history as they are drama.

Hollywood defines 'based on' as a connection of some type that might sell more tickets. In this case we can be sure that something happened somewhere and that is all hollywood needs.
