Drug users and potential vandals are locked out.

I worked at a gas station, and my manager was on the shift before me. He gave this old guy the bathroom key and I made him check on him before he left his shift. You may not believe this but the old guy had bought some razors and locked himself in the bathroom and when he came out he was all bloody and we had the ambulance guys there and about three police officers.

Weird things happen in gas station bathrooms, and I personally prefer to have a locked bathroom then to not be able to lock it.
People die, get hurt, and literally do things they shouldn't in gas station bathrooms, and in bathrooms in general. But most gas stations that are open twenty four hours need to be extra careful.

i worked for a gas station and the bathroom was outside ..

it was kept locked for 2 reasons :

1. no one could hide in their waiting to rob/rape or otherwise hurt someone ..

2.also the newspaper man put the papers in the bathroom till someone got there to open up and retrieve the papers

No, they just want to give you a moment of fame when you have to ask for the key for the bathroom in front of a bunch of old smelly dudes that usually hang around gas stations.

why when a gas station thats open 24/7 has locks on the doors

are they afraid of someone going to rob them while there open and they can hurry up and lock them inside and blow their brains???

Yes that's why we lock them!
Now you know the truth, now buy some gas or get out!

I've wondered the same thing. Just because a person asks for a key doesn't mean they won't steal - they don't ask for ID when you get the key now do they or check supplies after you leave!

gas station bathrooms have a reputation to uphold, they cant have people walking in there all willy nilly trying to clean them...that's they make you ask for the key, they want to make sure you aren't carrying any cleaning solution

Yes, of course they are. The last thing they want is a clean bathroom, it would ruin their image.

Because....their afraid that the smell might escape if someone leaves the door open.
