Great question, for tree house lovers, that's me . I built several as a kid, the first one was 30' off the ground and had 2 levels and a little brick fireplace. Another one was 60' off the ground in a big Eucalyptus tree we nailed 2' 2x4's every foot or so to get up to it. To go down we would tie a loop in a garden hose sit in the loop, throw the rest of the hose over a branch, grab the hose and lower ourselves all the way down, amazing no got killed and the hose was quite strong. I'm much older now but I have a tree platform it's up about 20' and I still go up there all the time , for a smoke, to watch the sunset, and to just relax and read. My cats will creep up and join me many times. I am totally into tree houses and I plan on building one in the hills to run off and hide in when things go to hell. In the meantime I'm planning and preparing. My next one will have all the amenities, just like a house on the ground, but way up in a tree!

The main reason is they are too busy being adults. Making a tree house is something kids do because they have time on their hands. Some adults should take a lesson from kids and make the time to make a tree house.

hi i think adults dont build tree houses for themselves because they forgot what enjoyment is to be a fun kid . its really to bad that adults cant learn lessons from listening to the kids i think your tree house idea is very unique and it sounds like an appealing place to live. closer to the sky and the birds and less noise up there in the tree house.and you could see the 4th of july fireworks so much easier.

I saw a program the other day of a company that specializes in tree houses, some these are full homes built on trees for summer homes . we are talking $300k, with a kitchen and bathroom etc. i dont think there are too many kids that have that kind of money.. they are elaborate and have architects, designers, everthing to meet code.
ps.... kids have treehouses to get away. we pay mortgages so we have a place to stay.

Well, I'd imagine that they have issues with ease of access, insects, emergency exits, marketability, and they're probably hard to insure. That being said, adults with a passion for tree houses do build them for themselves. Just check my sources:

Actually, there are several tree houses that adults have built for themselves and live in them. Try a treehouse search. I have seen several on HGTV that looked really interesting.

I have been telling myself, to get one built for 6 years. I lack the ability to do it myself but one day I will wind up with a hammer in one hand along with the boards and nails building one. The treehouse would actually be for my son! My husband wants to just buy one but that ruins the point of building one.

Because they have
TOTALLY FORGOTTEN how to be a kid! SOME things you just NEVER outgrow..I would love to have a trick Robinson-Caruso Tree House, and an adult sized playground with giant slides and swings and See SAWS and Merry-go-rounds!

Because they spend most of their time trying to purchase real houses instead of building something that is least important in their life.
