I'm not sure how all florists work, but a friend of mine started working at a florist shoppe with no experience. As she worked there she gained enough knowledge to start her own shoppe. I'm not sure if you are supposed to go to school for it, but she didn't have to...it may be a prefference.

If I were you, I would go to a florist in preferably in another town(keep competitors from being snappy to you) and simply ask to watch or Intern there if you haven't ever worked in one before(assuming you haven't) b/c sometimes owning your own business isn't all that it is cracked up to be. With holidays, and funerals it can be overwhelming. Not to count the days where you don't have a customer and with the economy like it is, small towns sometimes aren't like big cities. Are there any other established florists in your town, is another question.

I have always wanted to be a florist, just dont have the bucks to make it work. In my opinion the #1 thing you have to consider is you are working with live and cut plants. You have to know how to keep them healthy as long as possible. Then you have to think about how you will get them. Will you go to the airport daily? Will they be brought to you in a truck? How will you deal with the ones that are in bad shape? BUT, the good news is that if you go to designer school and work for someone else and learn the craft, your employer will be faced with all the tough issues, not you. Just keep making pretty flowers.....

My area has adult education classes on floral arrangements. maybe you should check with your community.

OR you can get a job at a florist. That will teach you the ins and outs of the business.
