don't use your toes to kick the ball with, but use the top of your foot (the shoelaces) for power, or the side for accuracy.
practice dribbling around things, is a good idea...but don't waste all your time running as you could be an olympic athlete but if you can't control or kick the ball your not going to make the team.
Also please note that as this is your first time, i doubt that your actually trying out for a high-caliber team, therefore fitness is not essential. A player who can pass the ball, and is smart, is much more effective than a headless chicken running around the field.
Don't worry about learning fancy moves either, like you said its your first time, practice ball control (juggling, dribbling), and passing/shooting against a wall...this should help you improve.

Try to get in shape by running, because you are gonna do lots of it in soccer. As far as skills that comes with experience. Try to practice juggling, kick the ball against a wall practicing how you hit it. Go to a park with a soccer goal and shoot at it from as far away as possible, concentrating more on placing it than power. Power will come later. Watch a lot of soccer too.

Other than being physically fit, i.e. having great stamina, you need to be able to control the ball well, improve your footwork/skills and have a good understanding of the game. Let me give you an example, knowing what's offside and how to set up a offside trap.
If you have proper guidance and help, try learning how to read the game or strategies of your opponents. Imagine if you can do that, you will know how to create attack and help your defenders.
The following is a website, should you be interested in searching some ideas on DVDs' soccer on how to improve yourself

Be disciplined, courteous and follow instructions. Don't be selfish in the field and remember you're not a lone ranger. Soccer is a team effort.

work on your foot work. i would do some ball taps w/ your feet practice your throw ins practice getting shots...lots of reps equals success. another BIG thing. go run a lot. soccer involves a WHOLE bunch of running. if you dont have stamina, your skills dont even matter. just get quicker, faster, and get aggresive. i hope that helps.

Juggle the ball and try to use your knees, thighs, and head, as well as your feet. Get/borrow a bunch of soccer balls, line them up in front of a goal, and just practice shooting, even without a goalkeeper.

Practice running...there's a lot of it. You can also practice dribbling around objects (like cones) to learn ball control.
Also, when you kick, always use your instep; don't kick the ball with the front of your foot. You will pull muscles in your leg; trust me.
