I agree with firebetty; the main reason people are not receptive to watching either ballet or modern concert dance performances is because dance is not taught in the schools. Kids can grow up seeing jazz, tap and other pop forms of dance on tv, so they grow up appreciating those forms. But without exposure to seeing ballet or modern performed, their ignorance affects what they choose to spend their entertainment dollars on.

You can see proof of this right here in some of the other answers. Ballet is "slow"?! Sure, parts of it are, but most ballets include fast parts as well, just like the pacing of a typical movie. Problems with "sitting down" for too long? What about movies like "Braveheart" or "Dancing with Wolves"? At least ballets will have intermissions if the concert lasts that long.

The problem is not with slowness or sitting inside. The problem is ignorance. People can't grow up to like something they haven't been exposed to.

I didn't research, but I think ballet is no longer popular is becuase the "now" generation has been raised to value exhileration and speed, and ballet is a mix of introspection, retrospection and just plain relaxation.

I love watching ballet, I am a ballerina, so maybe people that dance don't have the same appreciation of how much dancers work?

Ballet is actually relatively popular. It plays to sold out houses. I don't particularly like it myself, but I have to admire the control and expertise used in this dance.

Because people are heathens, and in the United States it is considered uncool to be civilized or to enjoy any of the classical arts. Ballet, like opera, gets defined as one of those elitist, snobby, dull activities those intellectual Europeans enjoy.
If you watch the right one, it is seriously SEXY.

Because in America, people have no appreciation for art. People here just watch Television all day and are too ignorant to understand any kind of real culture. The reason why is because they are not taught to appreciate it while they are young.

Like anything else, some enjoy it, some don't. Many don't have the patience, the interest in the music, or the understanding of the story. It's the same with many plays and such. TV requires much less commitment of intellect.

because it is way too slow and there is no contact and the music sucks so really the question should be
why does ballet exist?

probobly becuase people watched them a long time ago and now they think that its too old.
also, with the growing number of things to do outside, the music gets too long and ppl want to get somewhere else instead of sitting down.

also, the fact that tickets to see a pro dance are expensive may have something to do with it.
