Like interesting but free or cheap, I think that free things usaully turn out to be cooler and you can experience the culture more.

I love Avignon, but free (you got to pay to park, pay to stay, pay to see the sites, etc...), I guess people watching or window shopping, that is always interesting and cultural, awe and I believe you can walk out on the bridge for free (maybe). If you have a car, drive the surrounding little towns in the Luberon, my person favorites are Fountaine de Vaclouse and St Remy.

I am surprized that nobody mentioned the theater festival that takes place in Avignon in July.

The Papal Palace is cool, but not free. I enjoyed just strolling around the streets, but that's true for just about anywhere in Europe.

You must see the Papal Palace,it isn't free but it's a "must see" place and for free you can try if this french song is true:
