i tried to install drivers for new hard drive but nothing is working

you have to get the recovery cds from hp, or try calling in the technical support site for requesting recovery cds.If you are in warranty guess you will get it free of charge or you can always buy them, but first of all try to contact the tech support of hp as they will have all the information regarding your comp

Are you talking about a hard drive or a DVD drive? Your hard drive doesn't read a CD or DVD drive.

What size was the old drive, and what size is the new one?

Hard drives don't need drivers. How did you try to do this?

Sounds lik you aint installed the operating system yet! You need to put your op sys cd in and install it!

This is IDE cable problem. Change you cable and also try to use different cables for HDD (that is 80pin cable) and CD-ROM (that is 40pin cable).
