Strong and Ketter found that both creative students and those with bipolar disorders shared several personality traits. Such individuals were more open, and more neurotic and moody than the other study participants, according to findings presented at the American Psychiatric Association's annual meeting held in Philadelphia.

People with neuroticism tend to have more anxiety, lower self-esteem and lower tolerance for stress than other individuals, and they may feel alienated, victimized and resentful, the researchers note.

In an interview with Reuters Health, Strong explained that openness is a trait associated with a willingness to embrace new experiences, as well as being imaginative, curious and unconventional. These traits are often found in creative people, she added.

Because similar traits are found in those with bipolar disorder it might indicate that both creativity and the mental illness stem from a similar genetic predisposition.

Not all artists are unstable, but some give themselves over to the emotion of what they are doing more than others... and more than they should.

It is a difficult thing, trying to keep the balance between creating the emotion of the art and making the transition back to the way the rest of the world hides their emotions most of the time. Not everyone can cope with it.

Perhaps what you see as unstable behavior is the artist's personal reaction to their own creative process. Perhaps the things you describe as unstable, evidenced by mood, or attitude, or behavior - is a reaction of sorts within the artist -- something might be blocking their ability to create - it could be something tangible or imagined -- or perhaps a frustration between a concept that lies in their mind, and dissatisfaction with the gap between what was imagined and what sits before them. The need to create is a profound and powerful one. It is one, that can be truly energizing and transformative -- and whether or not their behavior conforms to society's standards seems less important than that internal drive that causes them to be whole.

i think i am unstable, but i'm not sure i'm an artist. sometimes i reeeeallly wish i had practiced artistic expression.
i think artists are able to capture and express the unspeakable in whatever form they chose. it is bottling the passion, the emotional upheaval, the intellectual insight... i think "unstable" simply reflects they feel too much and have a hard time dealing with it in everyday life.

Because unstable people only use one side of their demented brains. Hitler was an artist. He was certainly unstable.
