well the way i figure it the women wanted to see the romance whereas the guys wanted to see the action(And possibly the sex scene) and then you have to figure in those weird people who just wanted to see the ship crash(I'm one of those!)

The respondent that gave you your first answer is implying that the film Titanic had no good acting in it. Which I think was not true. I loved this movie so much, I saw it five times in the theatre.

It had 'guy' stuff and romantic 'girl' stuff in it. Kate Winslet is pretty easy to look at, the girls like Leo. There was death and disaster in it, and it was based upon a historical event. The thing I liked the most about this movie, was the ending - it has so much class - when they kissed at the end and everyone applauded. The zooming in on Rose's pictures - doing the things she talked about - riding a horse on the beach, learning to fly. The ending still brings a tear to my eye. Just, so beautiful. I hope someday I will find a love like that.

Because the average movie-viewer is a complete idiot, with absolutely no appreciation for fine acting, dialogue, or artistic value.

To I Squawk 1200: Yes, thank you for your comments, but you didn't exactly do a great job countering my point on the acting: "Kate Winslet is pretty easy to look at, the girls like Leo."

But I digress. I was merely stating that when I see a film, I'm looking for an awe-inspiring artistic masterpiece, and frankly, Titanic wasn't one of those.

Oh, and technically, when adjusted for inflation, Gone With the Wind is the highest-grossing film of all-time, and Titanic is sixth.

The sinking of the Titanic is one of the greatest tragedies in modern history. Just like in "Apollo 13" you pretty much know what's gonna happen at the end (for the most part) but it's getting there that is the draw for those who really liked the film.

I saw it once. That's enough for me. Some saw it multiple times (probably unofficial members of the Leonardo diCaprio fan club). Another theory may be that we love watching bad things happen to people.

I have no idea. But it made over 600 million dollars. Thats not even close to the second movie on the top box office list. Its crazy, i guess because it was at the right time in society and it had some popular actors and stuff like that. And people like that kind of stuff for some reason, and the guy above me is exactly right. i agree with him 100%

The love story. I used to manage a theatre, and that movie would be PACKED, even when it was in the little theatre, every showing every day every weekend. One lady saw it 30 times, I swear. And I always asked why they came again and again, and they said, the love story. This movie came out in the same mindframe as when Saving Private Ryan, Armegedon and other "testosterone" films were the kings of cinema ....it's a chick flick with action.

Teenage girls, going back for several showings, just to adore, Leonardo DiCaprio.
It wasn't a bad movie by any means, but like Star Wars, with all the teenage boys, seeing it again and again, the ticket sales skyrocketed.

Titanic's event is something that you really want to know what happened. Also it had a love story, it's a great combination.

Actually, it made over $1 billion dollars. I think people watched it because it was about one of the worst tragedies in history. Although most of the script was fabricated, it still depicted what may have happened that night.
