Just like everything else in life, it's all about balance. With the recent onset of online gaming, I don't think it's as bad as it used to be... You could be playing World of Warcraft for 8 hours talking over a headset to a friend half-way around the world about what it's like to live somewhere else while you hack up dungeons. This isn't necessarily going to get you any awards for people skills, but at least the social aspects are there again.
An interesting, somewhat-related tidbit: A couple years back a study was done that revealed businesses are starting to recruit gamers over non-gamers. The reason? Playing video games for years creates an inherent desire/ability to continuously attack the same problem over and over again until you beat it. Gamers are used to failing 5, 10, 50 times at something difficult and trying again from a new angle until they succeed.

If you play video games for hours a day, every day or so, for a few years. You may end up getting stupid in a way. I recommend going outside and try going out with some friends at least once every 2 weeks or so. Life is more interesting if you have a great social life. Just think of video games as a quick timewaster.

Well it depends upon the game. Sports games that kids play with friends are still ways to be social. I grew up in the Atari / Commodore eras, and I learned a few things while playing games. Flight sim games were among my favorite, and now I fly a real plane. But if your question involved chat rooms, it seems that people will talk about anything in a chat room - because they don't have to look anyone in the eye when they share their deepest secrets.

They don't make a person smarter or more social. All they do is improve hand-eye coordination for playing video games. Get outside and spend time with friends, for crying out loud!
