Depends on the person, and if you're doing them correctly. I do at least 100 a day and it hasn't done much, so I'm going to up it to 300. I seriously doubt that anything under 100 will do anything at all really.

Normally, many guys do about 600 to a thousand sit ups everyday to get nice abs.

A nice way to go about it is, start with 20 rest 1 min, then 19 rest 1 min 18 rest 1 min until you get to 0.

Do that for about 6 weeks and and you can do your clothes on your abs

It all depends on your definition of nice. If you want a flat stomach, you need to forget sit-ups and do exercises for each muscle group that make up the abs. 1, obliques 2, lower abs, 3, upper abs.
Do twisting crunches. leg lifts or hang from bar and lift knees to chest, and crunches. If you want a six pack, you need to get your bodyfat down to about 6% which is impossible unless you lift weights and put on some muscle. The Complete Book of Abs is a good reference. They give about 100 exercises to choose from.
