preferably on or as close to the strip as possible (but not absolutely necessary if there's something better)

I read about the Wynn Resorts--sounds fabulous, but I might need something a bit cheaper...so what is the best, nicest, safest & most affordable hotel in Vegas? Thanks!

I've been to Las Vegas a number of times. "Best" is a matter of opinion and depends a lot on what you are looking for. If you're highest priority is gambling, the old casinos on Fremont street are the best. If you go to every carnival or fair that comes to town, check out Circus Circus. If food is your priority, stay at Sahara for their kick butt buffet which is reasonably priced too. Sahara also has this NASCAR ride thing that is cool. I think they still have it. If shopping is your thing, stay at one of the hotels that have big malls attached to them, such as Ceasars and Mirage have the Forum shops nestled between them. If your priority is lush surroundings, stay at Bellagio, Venetian, or Paris.

For the BEST of everything.... stay at the BEST. New York New York. Why? Because it's NEW YORK NEW YORK. It has gambling for the adults, a HUGE game room for the kids, a roller coaster, Shops, a dueling pianos bar, shows, great food, etc. PLUS, it is in the safest part of town, which is a word you should use carefully in Las Vegas. You are as safe as you allow yourself to be in that town. After dark, if you are not familiar with the town, stay in the newer areas of the strip, and stay ON the strip. Stay away from the areas around the Old strip area. Stick between The Luxor and Treasure Island on the main strip, and you will not run into any problems.

If you have kids.... the Excaliber has an awesome gameroom downstairs too, with Midway games and the Jousting dinner show rocks. There is a walking bridge from NEW YORK NEW YORK to the Excalibur. I cant remember how to spell EXCALIBER, so I spelled it both ways. HAHAHA. Also , close to NY NY is a very large Gameworks. ALSO: If you walk up the strip, there will be people handing out flyers. The flyers are for dancers and strippers and the ads have nude photos. They WILL give them to your kids. Be aware of that if you are not ready to answer the question, "Daddy, what are those?"

Enjoy, and GOOD LUCK. Oh.... NEVER SPLIT TENS!!!

Hi again, I answered your question about Fitzgerald's downtown and you sound very nervous about Vegas. You really don't have to be. I'm a female who's made many trips there, sometimes on my own, and it's not unsafe or intimidating at all. You need to give clearer criteria, though. Do you want to sightsee, see shows, gamble, go nightclubbing, see free lounge acts, swim in a nice pool...? I can tell you, though, there's no real reason to stay OFF the strip except to save a little money. It's just an inconvenience, unless you like driving around like I do. (Dropping off a car and only tipping the valet $2 when you pick it up: PRICELESS.) But, I can tell you that you really need to decide what you can afford, and start from there. Nice midrange hotels: Luxor, Flamingo, Tropicana, Bally's. Excalibur is too noisy and crowded with kids, unless you really like carnivals. Same for Circus Circus. Best $saving tip: avoid fancy restaurants and buffets, they cost $25-50 a person or more!

I like Treasure Island (TI) Luxor, or New York New York. BUT, if you don't care about being in one of those strip hotels, I just stayed at the Hampton Inn - Tropicana - on Dean Martin Blvd. It's about a block off the strip, on the other side of I-15. It was really nice. Clean and safe and reasonably priced.

those words don't go together once u add affordable. No reason to stay in "best" place - it's vegas & not going to be in room! Only suckers pay that kind of $$. Downtown & Sams Town cheaper & safe.
