Well, one allegorical interpretation is that Hemingway WAS the old man, his books were the novels he wrote and the literary critics were the sharks that "tore the books apart."

Like I tell all the kids on this site. Do your own homework!!!! We all went through school without yahoo answers to do it for us, cmon have some pride! Read the book and find out for yourself. I really think you should not take answers from other people you are not going to make it far by always relying on others. Trust me people get through high school that way sure, but life is hard on them when they get out into college or the real world NO one gives hand outs when you are older you have to work hard for what you want. Start now and it will only be easier! Sorry for the lecture hun, but I really hate to see kids struggle!

I agree that you need to learn to figure this out for yourself but if you're going to end up buying a Sparks or Cliff Notes cheat sheet, you may as well check out this web site...it should help. Warning -- there were a lot of pop-up ads to buy stuff, free this and that...all you need to do is http://google.com to find these sites. Also, if you have access to an on-line library, you may be able to get on-line homework help...
