Fitzgerald's is a perfectly fine hotel - they have been doing a lot of work on it lately, upgrading and remodeling - adding features including a pool. You won't get anything extravagant but it will be a clean, comfortable room and you often will save a lot of money over hotels on The Strip.
However, you are not actually on The Strip and it isn't within walking distance. Although the neighborhood between Downtown and The Strip isn't as bad as described in another answer, it certainly isn't the best neighborhood in the world and it is just too far (about 2 miles to the very northern end of a 4 mile stretch). However you can take cabs or The Deuce bus (http://www.thedeucelasvegas.com).

If you look at a map, you'll see that Fremont St. is a few miles north of the Strip...a short ride by car/bus/taxi but too far to walk, especially since the Strip itself is miles long and too far to walk from end to end unless you're one heck of a walker. The Fitzgerald just won a popular vote for best value downtown on lasvegasadvisor.com, and it's quite decent. It has entertainment (shows) and a nice spot on the downtown mall area. Fremont Street is pleasant and walkable, only a few blocks long and has an overhead canopy (which is the light show at night). There's music outdoors at night and a colorful party atmosphere. Fitzgerald's has a so-so cafe but no buffet, but it's a short walk to the buffets at Golden Nugget, Fremont, or Main Street Station, which has an especially nice buffet. All the hotels have a choice of restaurants. Fitzgerald's is also close to Neonopolis at this end of Fremont Street, where there's bowling, restaurants, movies, and the "Lost Vegas" museum. My own comment: I prefer the Four Queens, which has a nicer cafe and prettier casino. To get around the Strip, use the monorail, trolley, bus or taxis if you can't drive. Ignore that ignorant answer. Not true at all. Fitzgeralds fine. Plenty of problems on Strip & everywhere else in the real world. Coul duse a few more elevators at peak time but solid on price & has what you need. Four Queens nearbye & has better gambling. You don;t walk to Strip but then most don't walk on Strip either. Cheap buses (double-decker Deuce - $5 all-day pass) runs every 15 minutes up to Strip. Area ok as long as stay in main downtown area just like Strip ok if stay on it. Otherwise just like any other metro area for risk.

Well I stayed at the Fitzgerald a few months ago and I had fun. It's a nice hotel and casino. The place is okay and the surrounding area is nice as well. But it is a small trip from the Strip though. But I would say stay there. Plus they have really nice rooms.

If your looking for a place to stay near the srtip, this is not it. Downtown is several miles away from the strip, and you have to wade through a heap of hookers, bums and drug dealers to get there. If you stay there, bring your Lysol, bug spray, pepper spray, and a bus pass to get to the strip.
