Constitutional Democratic Republic.

The difference from straight democracy is that we don't directly vote on each issue, but have representative who vote on each issue.

The other difference is the Consitution which limits the government from voting in certain things. For example, in a straight Democracy the majority of people might decide that Nazism is good and that all Jews should be killed. The Constitution prohibits the Democratic process from becoming "mob rule" and protects the rights of the minorities.

The United States is officially a democratic republic. We vote for representatives (Senators and Representatives) who stand in for the majority of the individual citizens of the United States in government work. The voting franchise makes the government democratic; the particular style of government is a republic, government by a distinct class of appointed citizens.

"Representative democracy" is an easier to understand version of this, but it's less accurate -- after all, "democracy" could refer to direct representation (e.g., each citizen is a Senator or Representative), which does not apply to the United States.

A democratic republic and many of us feel this should be dumped in favor of a parliamentary democracy.
