I am such a klutz and have broken all of my toes, except for my big toes. I have a sofa that has a hide a bed in it, so whenever I try to move "the beast", I break a toe....or just walking past it I walk right into it. Thankfully, that sofa is leaving me in a couple of weeks!
Anyway...it hurts, no doubt about that. The discoloration (purple, yellow, green) will take a few weeks. For the pain...Tylenol extra strength and only wear shoes when you have to...I recommend flip flops right now or open toed. Don't try jamming your toes into athletic shoes or formal wear shoes. It's only going to take longer to heal. I have been there!
As for your husband....if it's not broken, it's probably badly sprained. I would suggest loosly taping it to it's neighbor or ice. Also, only wear shoes when you have to. If he really wants to know if it's broken, see a podiatrist or your primary care physician. Hope that I have helped.

he may have fractured it, rather than broken it, if there's a great deal of pain and it is discolored. Unfortunately, there's not alot doctors can do for broken toes other than to let it heal and, if necessary, prescribe medication. I've broken my little toe on each foot a few times. Fractures are far worse than breaks, pain-wise. Depending on how he impacted his foot, however, it's possible he broke the base of the toe at the tarsal (the bones before the toes begin).
I'd definitely get it checked out if he can't walk, and the discoloration gets worse.

Sounds broken, but sometimes a sprain hurts worse, be sure it is not cold. If so go to ER as you have poor blood flow. If not it may hurt for greater that 6 weeks a little less every week after the first 2

It could be broken, or just a contusion (bruise). Either way, there's really nothing you can do for toes. Ice it for 10-15 minutes a few times a day, and make an anatomical splint (tape it to the toe next to it.)

The girl that won the last America's Next Top Model did when they had to wear those monstrous high shoes. She fell and broke her little toe, but she ended up winning the competition. I think it hurt her for a while, but she didn't let it show on her face!

ive broken my big toe and little toe on same foot and went to the dr about it. there is really nothing to be done about it by them. you can use thin medical tape and buddy tape it to the toe next to it. it helps
seemed to take about 4 to 6 weeks for the pain to totally go away.

It's possible that it is broken. I have broken my little toe on my right foot twice. It hurts like He**!! It healed a little crooked, so now it is kinda bent under my 4th toe. I tell people that is has been broken twice, so now it hides.

No but I've smashed it into God knows how many chair and table legs. I'm surprised I've never broken it, knock on wood.
