It's a fairly recent Acer laptop with an AMD Turion chip. It's never run this hot before...

As it is now, I've got an external monitor plugged in, I'm only running a few apps, and my ram and CPU aren't even at half capacity. My fan's been running non-stop and the computer even shut itself down a few times. !!!!!! It's resting on a table with the back propped up a bit to for some extra airflow.

What do you think could be the problem?!?!

CPU is only one source of heat. If you're doing something graphically intensive, you can generate heat on the GPU, especially if you have one that steals/borrows system memory. Also, there could be some background process using the hard drive, so check if it's spinning.

The only other thing I can think of is a problem with your fan or heat sync. If the fan's getting old or clogged it may not push as much air so it won't cool as well. Similarly, if your heat sync has gotten dislodged somehow that may be causing heat problems. Unfortunately, both of those are warranty problems.

i have had this type of problem before the little propping up on the back didn't help - i had to lift he whole laptop up by 2" - 4" so that the entire bottom could have air flow. Only the corners could have something under them otherwise it would overheat still. Also check to see if your fan isn't clogged.

The fan. I have one that gets hot. My computer
guy said it needs a new fan. He said even being
a laptop when you set it on pillows, or the bed it's
not good for air flow.
Now I keep my new laptop, on my lap on a piece of
foam egg grate. It may not be right, but the laptop
is alot cooler.
He said a new fan would be about $250.00.
He also feared running it could cause a fire, or
damage to the circuits...

Check for dust by turning the computer off and blowing hard into the air exhaust grill on the back of your laptop, if you get a lot of dust out it should run better, if that doesn't help take it in to be checked.

I believe there is more than one fan in a computer. I would check into whether or not that is the case with yours and if one of them is not running.

That Means That You've been using it to long and if you keep using it then it's gonna get slower and slower so what you have to do is Leave it off for about 30 minutes

Laptops just get hot, they lack the space to cool them properly.

Check to make sure you don't have something blocking the fan.
