A genetic experament that went wrong. It caused the Klingons to loose thier ridges, luckaly they were able to reverse it by the 24th century. this is of course according to Star Trek: Enterprise.

In reality they were unable to do the ridges in the '60's, but GR did want them to haave ridges back then.

Originally, when the movie Klingons came out with ST the Motion Picture, they tried to satisfy everyone with the answer that the old Klingons were from a different hemisphere of the Home World than the new Klingons. I have also read interviews where it was said that the newer look is what they would have originally liked, but it just couldn't be done originally.

There was a national fan organization, the Klingon Armada, which had members of both appearance when they would do charitable appearances, the older costumes were known as KLASSIC KLINGON. They told me that the older version was never as popular as the newer one.

According to Worf: "Yes, they ARE Klingons. It's a long story."
The scriptwriters decided not to tackle the obvious change in appearance, opting for continuity when they redid the Tribbles episode for ST:TNG.

The real reason they look like they look like they do now? Bigger budgets combined with jaded fans that want more than just a bit of greasepaint to make an alien.
