I think you have to refine your question. Do you mean just today? Throughout history, "classical" music has been popular for hundreds of years! Jazz has been a world phenomenon for almost 100 years, too.

If you mean "most popular in the world today," I think it is important to remember that there are more than a billion Chinese, more than a billion Indians, and around a billion Muslims. Probably few of these people know very much about rock OR hip-hop!

Even if you mean most popular in America right now, I'd have to ask among what age group. Rock tends to skew older, rap tends to skew younger.

But country music is huge and spans all age groups. It has its own awards shows and music-video channels, let alone several major markets with several country radio staions. I bet there are whole cities and maybe even states with country radio and no hip-hop radio... but no American cities with hip-hop and no country radio!

And let's not forget Latin music, which is large and growing. It also has its own awards shows and TV stations. Plus it was already around in South and Central America forever.

The single most global music genre, though, may be reggae. It is popular in North and South America, Australia, all of Africa, and is even gaining popularity in Japan! While hip-hop has influenced Afrian music for maybe 10 years, reggae has been there more than 30.

Remember, we have less than 300 million people in the US! That's only 5% of the world's population! Open your ears and you can hear the musics of Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Between the two, though, I would say hip-hop has overtaken rock, on the world stage. Rock is still solid in Europe, but hip-hop is focused on the beat, not the melody, and rhythm translates into any language... anywhere in the world.

Check out Billboard magazine. It will tell you that the most popular music genre in the US is Country. It's bigger than Rock or Hip-Hop.

I'm a jazz & blues kinda guy myself.

pop. that's why it's called "pop"...it's short for "popular". just like "pop-culture" is short for "popular culture".

it's true. look how many other genres spill over into pop: country, r&b, rock, etc...many blend into it to create what is known as "pop music".

It is definetly pop-punk. Every band that starts out in high school is a pop-punk band.
