everyone should have a decent affordable home, and the people who get a house, have to help build it so they can learn how to take care of it as well.
i like it cus it's a hand up, not a hand out.

It might be a bit extreme, but some charity organizations are actually lucrative businesses. take for example, for every dollar you donate, only 10 cents actually went to the patient in need, the rest of the money is spend or running the organization and paying the bonuses of the top executives. They can actually earn up to $500 000 per year, drawing a monthly pay of $25000 when all these money could have gone to helping out so many more needy people. My advice to you is to give the money directly to the people in need, at least you know that they got 100% of the money you donated.

I try to avoid charities with large administrative costs such as the United Way. I do however think that Habitat for Humanity does a good job helping people and getting the money where it needs to go. Hurricane region can definitely still use some help with housing.

St. Jude's Hospital~I have visited the hopsital many times and it is the most incredible place I have ever seen. There are many children from all over the whole that seek treatment for cancer ~ your $50 per month would be a tremendous help to finding a cure for these children. You can visit the hospital anytime to see your money at work~

Wolrd Vision or any organization that helps the most impoverished of the world, especially when they are childern. That charity has pretty low administration costs and you actually get to contact the child you are helping if you like. Plus their ultimate goal is to make that child's community self-sufficient.

The United Way has an excellent reputation in my community. Their administrative and fund-raising expenses are low, they re-distribute the proceeds to a good mix of charities, and many employers will take it out of your check automatically.
