Probably not.
But if we knew where you were someone could probably tell you what kind of snake it is.

probally just a black rat snake but you have alot of venomous snakes in that area. I would just stay clear of it. Alot of people on here are bleeding hearts for snakes but if you live in an area where there are alot of venomous snakes and you are not familiar with it, it is best to chop it's head off with a shovel and bury it. God made plenty of snakes. I have seen too many people and dogs especially get bit.

Assume it is poisonous. It could be a moc or any of the imitator species.

Call animal control. It's not worth getting bitten. A $60 removal fee is better than a $300 ER visit.

That doesn't sound like a poisioness one. Although if it was you could have died...it is normally smarter to stay still when you encounter a snake. That is what they teach you in survival classes at least. Call a animal control...near you, and have them come and get it.

Try http://www.pitt.edu/~mcs2/herp/SoNA.html - there's pictures of many snakes. It sounds small for most adults I'm familiar with. Until you KNOW otherwise treat all as poisonous - back off and give them space. They don't want to bother you. They'll keep rats, mice, gophers away. Don't bother them they won't bother you.

You can try looking on www.anapsid.org and find a person in your area that can describe it for you or pick it up and relocate it. There is a list of people that pick up snakes and such.
Or look up Melissa Kaplan's site. she has the first site.

Hard to say as I don;t know exactly what you are discribing. But if you are worried, just leave him alone and he will leave you alone. Snakes don't hunt people. As long as you are not bothering it, it will just live it's life and not cause you any trouble.

In your area there are a tremendous amount of Water moccasons which are poisonous. Be careful as i don't think you'd care to see it's belly.
