yo ho ho and avast me hearty, codswallop is a game we pirates play after too much grog...alls ye got to do is be tied to the mast and see how many wallops with a cod ye can takes..i took 159 afore i passed out on the deck (i think that was the grog though) ho ho twas the most fun i ever had with a dead fish..except for that one time.....yaaar.

I think a codd was a kind of bottle that had a glass marble in it that you shook to mix up the contents and wallop was a very low quality kind of beer hence the word came to be associated with anything of poor quality or of course it could just mean a slap round the chops with a dead fish!Best used with the expression " a load of old ..."

It's halfway between a sensation and a sound and it describes what happens when a cold rubber hotwaterbottle falls out of the bottom of the bed onto your foot while you are making it in the morning.
It can describe anything like this, really, where the sound/feeling is a sort of 'cod' followed by a 'swallop'.

I also believe that the literal meaning is from Hiram Codd's 1867 bottle invention ,as David C said.
Also,cods refer to the testicles and wallop to hitting/smacking..

To me, it is another way of saying B***S***. Or cow puckey, or whatever. A response to someone who has uttered something they'd like you to believe was pure fact, when you know its so far out there that it is just ridiculous. An exclamation of disdain and utter disbelief.
