I think a codd was a kind of bottle that had a glass marble in it that you shook to mix up the contents and wallop was a very low quality kind of beer hence the word came to be associated with anything of poor quality or of course it could just mean a slap round the chops with a dead fish!Best used with the expression " a load of old ..."

It describes something that is utter nonsense (the word itself has its roots in some beverage invented by a man named Codd). Here it is in a sentence: "I just read the Throne Speech, it's all codswallop!"

It's halfway between a sensation and a sound and it describes what happens when a cold rubber hotwaterbottle falls out of the bottom of the bed onto your foot while you are making it in the morning.
It can describe anything like this, really, where the sound/feeling is a sort of 'cod' followed by a 'swallop'.

It means total rubbish or arrant nonsense, balderdash.
I also believe that the literal meaning is from Hiram Codd's 1867 bottle invention ,as David C said.
Also, cods refer to the testicles and wallop to hitting/smacking..
Your guess is as good as mine.

To me, it is another way of saying B***S***. Or cow puckey, or whatever. A response to someone who has uttered something they'd like you to believe was pure fact, when you know its so far out there that it is just ridiculous. An exclamation of disdain and utter disbelief.

Pretty much the equivalent of a load of horse hooey.
Or, in more polite terms : nonsense.
(Great name, by the way.)
