I've tried the common remedies like holding the breath for 20 seconds or longer, and drinking lots of water, but both methods are not very effective for me. Now, whenever I have hiccups, I'll hyperventilate (taking quick and short successive breaths). It works for me though..

I put a teaspoon of sugar on my tongue, and swallow some water with it. For an odd reason, it works! I think it's more of a placebo effect, but as long as it stops them, I don't care! Good luck, I hate hiccups!

The way I get rid of hiccups is to hold my breathe and drink ten small sips of water and count them while you do it.

Call you doctor if they are severe and won't go away. A hiccup is actually your diaphram(muscle below your lungs) having a muscle spasm. Thorazine is often given...but need a doc.
