it gathers more energy from the warm ground or it transfers the energy carried by its winds to shallower water, creating huge waves that batter the shore or most of its energy returns to the sea and little is left to damage the land or its winds disappear and most inland damage is caused by flooding?

None of the above.

The "most" true statement would be that it "transfers" its energy from its winds to the shallower water creating waves, but it's not entirely true. Huge waves are also present in very deep water during a hurricane; it doesn't require shallow water to create large waves.

Oh, and contrary to some posts here, it doesn't gather most of its power from warm air, it gathers it from warm water. That's why it never gains strength once it hits land. Lord knows Florida's hot, and if it were the air that was the defining factor, these things wouldn't lose strength the moment they hit land.

A hurricane gathers strength over warm waters, as it approaches land it will weaken somewhat because the water temperature near the shore is cooler. The only statement that is true is: "it transfers the energy carried by its winds to shallower water, creating huge waves that batter the shore". The storm surge hits low lying coastal areas and the sea floods everything in its path. Tremendous winds batter buildings, trees and blow out windows. It rains, and rains and rains some more! Tornados are formed in the storm cells as it moves further inland. The wind damage and flooding can be devastating.

The energy that builds and drive a hurricane comes from warm, moist air. This happens over warm ocean waters. Once a hurricane hits land, it begins to disorganize. This happens in part because the swirling winds encounter resistance from the land and begin not keeping up with higher air currents in the storm. If it moves back over warmer water, it can build again. For lots more info on what a hurricane is, how it forms and behaves etc visit the following site:

A hurricane has a high pressure center or eye and the area surrouning the hurricane is low pressusre this is why the storm surge is so great at the front and sides of the storm. Simply put, it is like pushing your hand into a bowl of water. The pressure in the middle pushes the water out of the sides.
A hurricane gathers energy when it crosses over warm water, not land. This is why so many storms become severe when they enter into the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, i.e. Camille and Katrina.

A hurrican gathers energy from warm waters. It will lose strength over cooler water.

A hurrican LOSES strength over land because of both friction, and its need to store the energy in the water vapor in carries. (water tends to retain heat easier than air does.)
