The San Andreas is one of the many faults in California. There are many and some can cause catastrophic earthquakes. I lived near New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina at at my other home in Mississippi during Hurricane Ivan.
Disasters can be planned for and that is your best bet. Have multiple safe locations that you can meet up with people who know you. Also try to keep food, clean water, and first aid nearby at all times. If I were you I'd get a backpack and keep these items nearby at all times at work or in your car etc. Be prepared that cell phones will not work as they didn't here. Also plan on parts of the city to be heavily damaged making car travel impossible. Also be warned that tsunami are likely in southern california near earthquakes.

The San Andreas fault line is an active fault line where the Pacific ocean plate moves along side the north american plate. Earthquakes in this region will occur, and do occur often. Even if they are not felt, earthquakes happen regularly. As the Pacific plate shifts towards the north pole, friction is created causing quakes. Subduction, where one plate slides under another can also occur, cause quakes. Quakes in the region will continue until the fault line is no longer active, which is not predicted to happen anytime in the near future, if ever.

Check out predictions of EDGAR CAYCE on the www.
He predicted that all of California and the US West Coat will sink into the Pacific.
All that will remain will be a few small islands.
In other words, nuthin' to get excited about.
