Unfortunately America is set up so that it's nearly impossible to get anywhere without a car. The exceptions to this are cities with plenty of Cabs and Subways (i.e. New York City and Chicago).
When you're in the drunken mindset, you aren't responsible enough to get the address of the bar, find a phone, tell the cab where to meet you, and wait patiently until it comes. If a cab was wondering the streets like New York or Chicago, or if there was a subway nearby, then it would be easy to get around without drinking and driving, and many people wouldn't do it (and they don't do it often in those cities). Unfortunately most cities don't have as good public transportation as chicago or new york so it's left up to a drunk person to make a choice:
1) Spend buttloads of money on a cab and wait patiently until it comes
2) Call a friend (who most likely is drunk too at that hour)
3) Risk it and drive home.
And when you're in a drunk state of mind, you're decision making skills are gone, so many times people choose option 3.
That's why it's always important to plan your way home BEFORE you drink - i.e. designated driver, or have someone come pick you up at a scheduled time.

Because most people loose their sense of judgement when drunk. I've done it. When I was in high school, I went to a party and got drunk. I also stopped drinking and a reasonable time and waited a few hours before driving home. I thought I was fine, but evidently not, because I got pulled over. The deputy said I was weaving. Luckily, he knew my dad. He let me off with a warning. That was scary enough for me. Never did that again. If I plan to drink, I plan a ride, drink at home, or stay the night at the friend's house where I'm drinking.

The average person who has been cited with a DWI has driven drunk on average over 200 times without getting caught. SCARY!!!
Alcohol makes people lose their sense of judgment and inhibitions therefore, they think they're okay to drive but they're not.
Countless people's lives have been ruined because of drunk drivers. Plan ahead, before you drink about how you are going to get home whether it's a designated driver or a cab. Just don't drink and drive!!!

Because they go somewhere in their own car, have something to drink, and then figure they are sober enough to drive home rather than have the inconvenience of having someone pick them up or whatever it takes to get home some other way.
The secret to this one, of course, is to give yourself plenty of time to absorb and eliminate the alcohol before you drive. Take a room in a motel if you must, or just go sleep in the car.

because they weren't taught right from wrong enough when they were young or at the time being. I have had uncles and relatives been killed from drunk drivers, i will never ever drink and drive, people need understand the horrible things that will happen, and the consequences to prepare for like jail or man slaughter........its just not worth it.

They do it because they are at the bar or a friend's house, their car is there (maybe a parent's car), they have no $ to get home by taxi and/or they don't want to have to leave the car overnight and come back for it.
All of those answers and of course, they think they can drive just fine.

Well I must admit, I did it in my younger days many years ago, but I wouldn't do it now...
When I was younger, there wasn't as many laws or as much traffic on the road...
Now with all the laws and traffic, I wouldn't do it for anything...
It used to be fun a long time ago...
I used to like to drive when I was tipsy and listen to my tunes and look at the city at night with all the lights on...
But you couldn't pay me to do that now...
Too many other problems on the road...

To prove they can handle it. And it's not like they know while they're drunk that it matters if they drive drunk. They THINK they can handle it. Never done it though. And i don't plan on it.

To get home.
if there was a public way to get home reliably (that is not insane expensive like a taxi) people would drive drunk much less.

Yes I did it...did $17,000 worth of damage on my car...totaled. Needless to say, since I was spared with a scratch and didn't kill anyone, I don't do it anymore!!!
And yes, if I had other transportation that night I wouldn't have drove...
