The iPod became the conduit through which people could control a small portion of their environment. They were allowed to tune the rest of the world out and replace it with an audible universe of their own design. The digital world of music was starting to reach a critical mass on folks' personal computers. Apple was able to bring to market a product that fit a need (how can I take it with me without a bulky laptop?)...in an elegant, functional, and easy to use manner. iTunes pushed the product over the top. In a nutshell: Right Place, Right Time, Right Products.
